Spartan Three-Peat!

SALISBURY, Md. – With Taylor Brummitt's third-minute tally, the York College men's soccer team captured the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with a 1-0 victory over host #17 Salisbury, Saturday afternoon. The Spartans, who improve to 11-5-5, win their third straight CAC title and gain the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Sea Gulls drop to 13-3-3 on the season.

Brummitt tallied the game-winner just 2:36 into the contest as his fifth goal of the season proved quite a meaningful one. Along the right side of the field, Justin Facer threw the ball into Chris Weaver as the Spartan forward made a quality move to turn and get to the end line with the ball. Weaver then knocked a low near-post service back above the six-yard box. Brummitt, who has now scored in each of York's three CAC Tournament matches this season, got himself to the service approximately seven yards from goal. Redirecting it on an angle, across the face of the Salisbury goal, Brummitt's one-timed attempt tucked inside the far left post for the eventual game-winner.

A usual York-Salisbury contest, the remainder of the 87:24 proved a hotly-contested and passionate match. With a good portion of the game played between the 18s, both squads locked down defensively as neither posted the game's second tally.

Spartan goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh put together an exceptional performance, especially in the second half. The 6'5" senior netminder consistently gobbled up flighted balls that the Sea Gulls sent into the York penalty area. Kavanagh's outstanding play led to his seventh shuout of the season York's tenth overall this year.

As time ticked down, the Green and White did well to finish off the match. As the final whistle sounded it was hugs and smiles all around as York celebrated their third consecutive league title and sixth overall.

York's 2011 title-winning match proves quite similar to their 2005 championship win just six years ago. Playing at a highly-ranked Salisbury squad on November 5, 2005, the Spartans notched a 1-0 triumph, courtesy of a first-half tally from Chris Ports.

With this year's victory, the Spartans advance to the NCAA Tournament for a remarkable seventh straight season. Pairings are slated to be announced early next week. Please check back to for complete tournament information.
