FREDERICK, Md. – The York College men's soccer team closed out their 2011 Capital Athletic Conference regular season slate on with a 2-1 Monday afternoon triumph over Hood in Frederick, Md. With the victory, the Spartans move to 8-5-4 on the season including a 4-1-3 mark in league play. The Blazers fall to 3-10-1 and 0-7-1 in conference action.
Junior forward Antonio Bua, who was recently named both the Spartan Athlete of the Week and the CAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, posted the match's first tally in the 25th minute. A pair of Green and White attempts, the first a Bua strike off the crossbar followed by a blocked shot from Pablo Martinez, eventually developed into the first Spartan corner of the game. Austin Johnson drove in the service, as Bua was able to finish the opportunity with a quality skimmed-on header to notch his sixth goal of the season.
The Spartans wasted little time in stretching their lead to 2-0 as Johnson found the back of the net in the 30th minute. Senior captain Mike Gill played a ball into Taylor Brummitt in York's attacking third. The Spartan forward was able to lay it to Johnson who finished his chance from outside the six-yard box.
The second half saw York's lead drop to just one in the 61st minute. Eric Diehl and Mike Yencho combined for the tally, slashing the Spartan lead in half. Goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh got to Yencho's header but the ball just barely went in for Yencho's first goal of the season.
Throughout the final 29 minutes, York pushed for an insurance tally as they registered seven shots during that span. However, that third goal would not prove necessary as the Green and White came away with the 2-1 triumph.
Peppering the Hood goal throughout the 90 minutes, the Spartans held a significant 30-8 lead in shots, forcing Hood goalkeeper Will Lane into nine saves, while also leading 10-5 in corners.
With their CAC slate now complete, the Spartans receive the third seed for the upcoming conference tournament. York is set to host that contest, against an opponent yet to be determined, on Saturday, October 29, at 2:00 pm.
Prior to the start of the league playoffs, the Spartans close out their 2011 regular season on Wednesday, October 26. York is scheduled to travel to North Carolina Wesleyan for a 3:30 pm non-conference tilt.
