Bua Notches Two as Spartans Grab 4-1 Triumph at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The York College men's soccer team picked up their second straight victory Wednesday evening, topping host Stevenson 4-1 in Owings Mills, Md. The Spartans' Capital Athletic Conference victory, their second in as many matches, improves their record to 5-5-3 including a 2-1-2 mark in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 6-7-1 and drop to 2-3 in league play.

The Spartans jumped out front early, snagging a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play. Junior Cody Pearson pinged a corner kick into the box which Trey Good alertly flicked on toward the back post. Chris Weaver finished the chance three yards from the line for his second tally of the 2011 campaign.

Just over 30 minutes later, the Green and White notched another double-assist score to stretch their lead to 2-0. Begun by a Spartan corner from Pearson, the initial service was cleared out by Stevenson. However, Spartan midfielder Justin Facer headed the ball back toward the Mustang goal where Austin Johnson quickly flicked it into the middle. Freshman Will Duddleson, who had subbed in for York five minutes earlier, proved in the right place at the right time as he finished chance for his second collegiate goal.

In the 57th minute, Antonio Bua gave the Spartan side a three-goal cushion with his second tally of the year. The athletically gifted forward pressured a Stevenson defender, winning the ball in a good area to quickly attack. Beating a defender, Bua then finished past Stevenson goalkeeper Ryan Flannelly to push the score to 3-0 York.

Shortly afterward however, the Mustangs broke through to cut the Spartan lead to 3-1. Just 90 seconds after Bua's tally, Josh Stover, from the right side of the box, hit a quality left-footed shot that tucked inside the far post.

Putting the clamps down after that, the Spartan defense only allowed one late shot from the Stevenson side throughout the rest of the 32 minutes of action.

Bua would provide the final result in the 83rd minute of play. With a ball played toward the corner in York's attacking third, Weaver swiftly dashed after the ball, chasing it down before it rolled over the end line. Weaver would provide a quality service toward the Mustang goal where Bua was able to get to the near post to head home the match's final score.

For the game, the Spartans outshot Stevenson 17-9 including 11-4 in the second half. York also posted a 5-3 lead in corners.

Goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh picks up the win in the Spartan net as he made three saves over his 90 minutes of work. Flannelly made two stops for the Mustangs and was relieved by Pat Carey for the final 3:58.

Having won two straight, the Spartans will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday, October 15, as they welcome CAC foe Mary Washington to Graham Field. Match time is slated for 3:00 pm.
