YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team recorded their third well played game in a row. However, unlike their previous two results, this time the Spartans came away from the contest with a win as they posted a solid 2-0 victory over St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference play on a brilliantly beautiful Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans, who lost their previous two games in heartbreaking fashion, put together a very workmanlike effort in defeating the Seahawks.
York improves to 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the CAC while the Seahawks fall to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.
The Spartans opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game. The Seahawks were whistled for a hand-ball just outside the box. The Spartans lined up for the free kick. With Justin Facer and Antonio Bua shielding the Seahawk defense, Facer touched it to defender Cody Pearson who unleashed a low screaming shot that found the back of the net for the 1-0 Spartan lead. The goal was Pearson's second of the year and set the Spartans up with the early lead.
The Green and White had a second great opportunity late in the half as Chris Weaver wove his way to the end line where he put a beautiful cross in the box for the Spartans. Unfortunately for York, no one was in the box to receive the pass and the opportunity was wasted as York maintained the one goal advantage.
York continued to carry the play in the second half. York fired off four shots in the opening 15 minutes of the half but then really started to apply pressure to their guests. Junior Michael Andrei took a brilliant feed from Pablo Martinez in the 63rd minute. Andrei crushed a shot just outside the box and the shot skimmed just over the cross bar as the Seahawks avoided the two goal deficit.
That began a flurry of chances for the Spartans as York had seven shots over the next 20 minutes including three shots that hit either the cross bar or the post. The Spartans stellar play was finally rewarded when Pearson hit a well placed corner kick on the head of Taylor Brummitt who deposited the ball into the back netting in the 83rd minute. Bua followed Brummitt's goal with a near-goal, hitting the crossbar less than a minute later as York continued to push hard into the Seahawks defensive third.
The Spartans ended the game holding a 22-7 edge in total shots including a 7-4 margin in shots on goal. York also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Ethan Kavanaugh registered the clean sheet with four saves en route to his second career shutout. Austin Brown recorded five saves in his 90 minutes in goal for the Hawks.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Stevenson University to face the Mustangs in a CAC contest. Game time from Owings Mills, MD is set for 7:00 pm.
