Spartans Best Crusaders in Rainy Tuesday Contest
YORK, Pa. – Cody's Pearson's 26th minute free kick lifted the York College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Susquehanna on a rain-soaked Tuesday afternoon in York. With the triumph, the Spartans pick up their first win of the young season and move to 1-2 while the Crusaders suffer their first loss of 2011, falling to 2-1.
Following a Susquehanna foul nearly 30 yards from goal, the left-footed Pearson lined up the set piece opportunity on the right side of the pitch. The junior Spartan unleashed a missile of a shot that screamed into the far upper side of the goal out of the reach of Crusader goalkeeper Zach Zoller.
Despite Pearson's effort as the lone goal of the match, both sides created dangerous opportunities throughout the non-conference contest. Susquehanna provided significant pressure early in the first half as the Crusaders posted two corner kicks and two shots on goal within the first 15 minutes.
The Spartans however, after responding with Pearson's goal, had several quality opportunities of their own. One of York's best chances came in the 51st minute. Following a nice combination on the right between Chris Weaver and Justin Facer, Facer played in a dangerous service. An ensuing rebound left Antonio Bua with a great opportunity but his effort came up just short. In the 87th minute, Facer again was in the mix of a dangerous chance as he served in an outstanding ball from the left. Michael Andrei found himself wide open in the middle of the field and inside the penalty spot awaiting the service. However, his ensuing header sailed just high.
Ethan Kavanagh collects his first win in the Spartan goal after recording five saves over 90 minutes to preserve the shutout. Kavanagh came up big on several occasions to keep the clean sheet.
York's victory stretches the Green and White's win streak over Susquehanna to nine consecutive contests. Of those nine triumphs, eight have been decided by one goal while each of the last three wins have been by 1-0 results.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, September 10, as they host the 2011 Holiday Inn Conference Center / Parma Pizza Soccer Classic. The two-day tournament features York against Cabrini at 1:00 pm and New Jersey City University against McDaniel at 3:00 pm on the 10th. The tournament is slated for a Sunday finish with the consolation game scheduled for 1:00 pm and the championship set to kick off at 3:00 pm.
