Spartans Drop Season-Opener to Virginia Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The York College men's soccer team was a dealt a 1-0 blow on Friday evening, falling to Virginia Wesleyan in the opening match of the Christopher Newport University Tournament. The Spartans fall to 0-1 to start the season for the first time since the 2002 campaign where they also feel to Virginia Wesleyan at the CNU Tournament. With the victory, the Marlins begin the campaign with a 1-0 mark.
The match's lone tally came courtesy of Wesleyan's John McKenzie in the 79th minute. Receiving a cross from the left, McKenzie finished off the chance into the right side of the net, providing what would prove to be the game-winner.
York was not without chances however as the Spartans owned a 13-8 advantage in shots and a huge 10-1 margin in corner kicks. Cody Pearson provided one of the Green and White's most dangerous opportunities in the 57th minute but that attempt was cleared away from the goal line by the Marlin defense. Taylor Brummitt and Chris Weaver each registered three shots for the York side.
Spartan goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh collected three saves in his opening-match start while Wesleyan's Jay Coble notched four stops.
The Green and White will look to right the ship early as they return to action on Saturday, September 3. York is slated to face host Christopher Newport in a 7:00 pm tilt.
