Five Spartans Garner All-Region Accolades
YORK, Pa. - The York College men's soccer squad received great news Wednesday afternoon as five Spartans were named to the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru Men's Soccer Division III All-South-Atlantic Region team. Lucas Emil, Andy Stromberg, Jesse Derksen, Mike Gill, and Kemal Nuspahic were all named to the second-team for their tremendous contributions throughout the season.
Senior midfielder Lucas Emil makes his third appearance on the all-region squad as he played in all 22 games this season. The technically gifted midfielder scored two goals and put up three assists for the Green and White. Emil, an ever-dangerous playmaker in the middle of the pitch, also notched 45 shots as he proved a major threat on the field for the Spartans.
Fellow junior Kemal Nuspahic garners his third all-region accolade after playing in 21 of the 22 Spartan matches. A dangerous attacking player who is a consistent threat in the attacking third, he tallied four goals on the year, including three game winners.
Andy Stromberg, a junior centerback for the Green and White, was chosen to the all-region squad for the first time in his career. He played in 20 of York's 22 matches as he proved a defensive stalwart throughout the campaign. Additionally, Stromberg was a threat in the offensive third as he put up two goals on the season, including the game-winner in York's 3-0 win over Medaille.
Goalkeeper Jesse Derksen, who assumed the full-time #1 role as a sophomore this season, started all 22 games for the Spartans. Landing on the all-region squad for the first time, the talented netminder posted a glittering 0.46 goals against average as he continually thwarted dangerous attempts during the season.
Junior captain Mike Gill served the Spartans in a pair of differing roles over his 21 games this year. Gill, another first-timer to the all-region list, began the year as one of the Spartans' central midfielders, but was pushed up to a forward's role as the year progressed. The hard-working player tallied five goals for the Green and White, two of which were game winners.
This marks the sixth straight year that the Spartans have landed multiple student-athletes on the all-region squad.
Sporting a consistently tough schedule, during the regular season the Green and White played against 27 all-region selections.
With the departure of only Emil, the Spartans look to be in outstanding shape heading into next season.
