Spartan Men's Soccer Set to Host NCAA First and Second Round Contests
YORK, PA-For the sixth consecutive season, the York College men's soccer squad has earned a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament as the brackets were announced Monday afternoon by the NCAA. The Spartans, who earned an automatic bid courtesy of Saturday's Capital Athletic Conference championship win in penalty kicks, have earned the right to host a pair of first round matches and a second round match on Saturday and Sunday.
The Spartans face Kenyon College in the regional's opening match on Saturday at 11:00 am. The Spartans, who are 16-4-1, face a 14-2-2 Kenyon squad that earned an at-large bid after falling in the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. In Saturday's second match, Ohio Wesleyan (16-1-2) and Catholic University (11-5-4) play at 1:30 pm or 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first match. Ohio Wesleyan earned the automatic bid of the North Coast Athletic Conference while Catholic nabbed the Landmark Conference automatic bid to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Saturday's winners will square off on Sunday at 1:00 pm with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
The Spartans have advanced to the Elite Eight in three of the last four seasons. They have been selected to host NCAA Tournament action at Graham Field in four of the last six years. The Spartans hosted in 2006, 2008, 2009, and now 2010.
York will be no stranger to a number of teams in the draw. The Spartans have played five of the 59 other teams in the tournament. York faced Medaille, Messiah, Johns Hopkins, Stevens and Lynchburg during the regular season. The Spartans went 2-3 against those squads. York defeated Medaille and Lynchburg while Johns Hopkins and Stevens each edged the Spartans by a goal. Messiah posted a 2-0 win in Grantham, PA on October 5. The loss to Messiah was the last loss of the Spartan regular season. York finished the season 12-1-1 over their last 14 matches after a 4-3 start to the season.
Tickets will be $6.00 for adult general admission, $3.00 for seniors (60 years old and up), military personel with photo identification, and students with school identification, and $2.00 for children ages 3 through 12. Advance ticket sales will be conducted on Friday, November 12 at the main desk of the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The York College athletic department will be purchasing 200 student tickets that will be made available on Friday for pick up. One free ticket per student with York College ID.
