Spartans Snag 3-0 Senior Day Triumph
YORK, Pa. – On an unseasonably warm but cloudy late-October day, the York College men's soccer team defeated the visiting Hood College Blazers 3-0, to improve their record to 15-4 and 8-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
For seniors Doug Bauer, Mike O'Connell, Lucas Emil, Adam Good, and Treyton Good the match proved a special one as they were honored during the Spartans' annual Senior Day festivities prior to the CAC tilt. With today's victory the Spartans' senior class improves their record to 71-8-8 overall and 29-1-2 in conference play over the past four years.
From the opening whistle the Green and White were on the attack. The offensive pressure continued to build as the game progressed, resulting in more and more scoring opportunities. The first goal of the day came in the 26th minute, when Chris Weaver put home his second goal of the season courtesy of a cross by O'Connell and a header from Antonio Bua. A falling down Weaver notched York's opening salvo as he put the attempt past the Blazer goalkeeper William Lane.
That slight edge would hold throughout the remainder of the first half as the Spartans held a 1-0 lead over the Blazers at the half.
At the start of the second frame, that first-half offensive pressure from the York squad began again and continued throughout the remainder of the match.
The Green and White's second goal of the game came in the 65th minute on a tally by Antonio Bua for his fourth goal of the season. Kemal Nuspahic and O'Connell provided the second double-assist on the score.
In the 81st minute, Seth Hurley would put away the game's final goal, for his first tally of the season. Hurley recorded his score, courtesy of York's third double assist of the match this time via Bauer and Jason Good, as he notched the score on a shot from outside the 18-yard box.
Throughout the day the offensive pressure remained consistent and constant. Bauer, who drew his first collegiate start today, nearly put the Spartans up 4-0 on a free kick just outside the 18 in the 82nd minute. Unfortunately the Blazer keeper Lane just got to the ball to leave the result at 3-0.
The defense proved to be a dominating force again today, despite missing a pair of starters. As a whole, the defense provided the pressure all day and, for the 13th time this season, registered a shutout. Spartan netminder Jesse Derksen had to make only one save during his 81:06 as he was relieved by Ethan Kavanagh for the match's final 8:54. Kavanagh was not forced to make a stop.
As a result of their 8-0 record in conference play, the Spartans not only capture the regular season CAC championship but they also secure the a bye in the first round of the CAC Tournament. The Spartans will return to action next Wednesday, November 3, when they host a semifinal match. The time and opponent for the semifinal match are to be determined after first round action this weekend. Visit www.ycpspartans.com for updated information on York's trek through the postseason.
