Derksen Nabs CAC Weekly Honor for Second Time in 2010
YORK, Pa. – York College sophomore goalkeeper Jesse
Derksen has been chosen as the latest Capital Athletic
Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week as released by
the conference office Monday afternoon. Derksen, who also garnered
the honor back on October 4, helped the Spartans to a 2-0 week and
secured the CAC regular season championship.
In York's first outing on Wednesday, Derksen was a key cog in the
Spartans' 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory over visiting
Gettysburg. After the Bullets scored just 1:11 into the match,
Derksen and the rest of the York defense effectively shut down the
Gettysburg attack as they allowed just two shots after the opening
score. In the second half with the game level at 1-1, the standout
goalkeeper did make an incredible diving save to his right,
parrying away the potential go-ahead goal. Derksen's work helped to
pave the way for Mike O'Connell's
game-winning heroics just over five minutes into the first
overtime.
Visiting #8 Salisbury last Saturday in the always heated CAC tilt,
Derksen recorded his eighth clean sheet of the campaign as York won
1-0. The sophomore turned away each of the Sea Gulls' five attempts
on goal as the dangerous Salisbury attack recorded a total of 16
shots. Furthermore, the Green and White played a man down after a
red card in the 26th minute forced the Spartans to play with only
ten men for the remaining 64 minutes of action.
Thus far in 2010, Derksen has started in each of York's 18
contests as he has seen over 1,580 minutes of action between the
pipes. He sports a sparkling 0.46 goals against average and a
strong .862 save percentage.
Derksen and the Spartans return to action on Tuesday, October 26,
when they host CAC foe Hood in the Green and White's final regular
season match. Prior to the 3:30 pm start, the squad will honor its
five senior student-athletes – Doug Bauer, Lucas
Emil, Adam
Good, Treyton
Good, and O'Connell – for their tremendous work during
their time in a Spartan uniform.
