O'Connell Named Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week
YORK, Pa. – York College men's soccer senior forward Mike O'Connell
has been chosen as the latest Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week for his
tremendous performances during the Green and White's 2-0 week.
In a pair of Capital Athletic Conference road matches, O'Connell
notched a goal in each game, lifting the Spartans to a 6-0 mark
against CAC competition in 2010.
On Wednesday afternoon at Mary Washington, the senior recorded
what would prove to be the game-winning tally in the 63rd minute.
Rookie standout Pablo Martinez hit
a shot that the Eagle goalkeeper was unable to corral allowing
O'Connell to finish off the rebound. York would go on to register
the 2-0 triumph.
Traveling to Wesley College on Saturday, the Green and White
picked up a 3-0 conference victory. In that match, O'Connell scored
his fourth of the season as he tallied York's second of the game in
the 82nd minute.
Of the senior's four goals this season, three have come during a
CAC contest.
O'Connell and the Spartans will look to stretch their current
winning streak to four games as they welcome nearby Gettysburg to
Graham Field on Wednesday, October 20, in a 4:00 pm non-conference
match. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, that tilt is
slated to be the men's soccer team's first "Give Cancer the Boot"
game in which the Spartans will don pink warm-up shirts and pink
arm bands. T-shirts will be sold during the event with all profits
going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
