YORK Pa. – York College junior men's soccer standout Andy Stromberg has been chosen as the latest Spartan-Athlete-of-the-Week honoree for the 2010-2011 academic year. Stromberg led the Spartans to a 2-1 week including the title in the inaugural Country Inn & Suites/Parma Pizza York College Soccer Tournament.
In the first game of the weekend tournament against Medaille, Stromberg scored the first goal, the eventual game-winner, within the opening five minutes of the match. It was the centerback's first goal of the season. That tallied sparked a three-goal effort from the Spartans as they recorded a 3-0 triumph.
Headed by Stromberg, the Green and White defensive unit had a truly heroic performance allowing just four shots, including a mere one shot on goal.
In the next match, Sunday's championship game against McDaniel, the Spartan defense held strong once again as they did not allow a goal for the second straight contest. Stromberg's stellar leadership and rock-solid play gave the Green Terror attack fits throughout the 90 minutes of action.
For his weekend efforts, Stromberg was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Earlier in the week, Stromberg and Spartans suffered a tough 2-1 double overtime defeat at the hands of #6 Johns Hopkins, but only allowed one goal in the flow of play. The talented Blue Jay squad notched their first on a free kick attempt.
Stromberg will look to lead the Spartans against Kean this Wednesday, September 15. The Green and White will travel to Union, New Jersey for a 4:00 pm non-conference match.
