YORK, Pa. - York College junior midfielder Mike Gill collected the first Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors for the 2010 campaign.
Gill led the Spartan squad to a 2-0 week as York topped Susquehanna and Cabrini to open the year.
Against the Crusaders, Gill led a defensive effort that saw the Green and White post a shutout over the 96:56 of play, only allowing five shots to the Susquehanna side. That defensive work allowed sophomore Justin Facer to tally the game-winner in the first overtime as York captured the 1-0 victory.
In Saturday's match at Cabrini, Gill not only helped the Spartans to a commanding 3-1 win but also provided a goal and an assist during the match. York only allowed five Cavalier shots throughout the 90 minutes of play while the Green and White notched 26 attempts.
The junior captain's exceptional toughness and understanding of York's defensive concepts helps the Spartan defense thwart numerous attacks before they become dangerous.
Gill will look to lead the Spartans once again as they take on #6 Johns Hopkins in a clash of top-ten squads on Wednesday, September 8, in York. The tenth-ranked Spartans host the Blue Jays in a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt.
