Spartan Men Selected to Host First and Second Round Matches
YORK, PA-For the fifth consecutive season,
the York College men’s soccer squad has earned a trip to the
NCAA Division III National Championship tournament as the brackets
were announced Monday morning by the NCAA. The Spartans, who earned
an automatic bid courtesy of Saturday’s Capital Athletic
Conference championship win, have earned the right to host a pair
of first round matches and a second round match on Saturday and
Sunday.
The Spartans face Cazenovia in the
regional’s opening match on Saturday at 11:00 am. The
Spartans, who are 15-1-4, face a 12-6-1 Cazenovia team that won the
NEAC crown after besting Dallas 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday.
In Saturday’s second match, Amherst (11-3-1) and Salem State
(9-8) play at 1:30 pm. Amherst earned an at-large “Pool
C” bid while Salem State earned the Massachusetts State
College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) automatic bid with their 1-0
win over Westfield State on Saturday.
Saturday’s winners will square off on
Sunday at 1:00 pm with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
The Spartans have advanced to the Elite Eight
in two of the last three seasons. They have been selected to host
NCAA Tournament action at Graham Field in three of the last five
years. The Spartans hosted in 2006, 2008, and now 2009.
York will be no stranger to a number of teams
in the draw. The Spartans have played six of the 58 other teams in
the tournament. York faced Medaille, Messiah, Christopher Newport,
Johns Hopkins, Stevens and Salisbury during the regular season. The
Spartans went 2-1-2 against those squads. York defeated Messiah and
Stevens while Christopher Newport handed York its only loss of the
last two seasons in early October. The Spartans tied Medaille and
Salisbury during the year.
