YORK, PA - Following his outstanding week in leading the #4 York College men's soccer team to their first Capital Athletic Conference Tournament title since 2006, senior All-American Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) has been chosen as the latest Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week for his performance during the span of November 2-8.
Ports was York's catalyst during their two-game run through the league playoffs as the Spartans ousted third-seeded Mary Washington in the semifinals before topping fourth-seeded Stevenson in the final.
Against the Eagles on Tuesday, Ports recorded the match's opening tally in the 10th minute of play. The senior collected a pass from Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg, Pa./Warwick), who had combined through the midfield with Lucas Emil (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic), before before tucking in his fifth score of the season. The Spartans went on to secure the 4-1 victory.
In Saturday's championship, Ports provided the helper on Mike O'Connell's (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) opening salvo for the Green and White. From the right endline, the senior slipped a great service across the turf in front of the Mustang goal allowing O'Connell to knock home York's first goal of their 2-1 league-winning result.
For the season, Ports has registered five goals and eight assists for 18 points. More importantly, his relentless motor and energy have galvanized the Green and White.
The Spartans now head into the NCAA Tournament, beginning the national playoffs this Saturday, November 14. York has been chosen to host during the first weekend - the tournament's first and second rounds - as the Spartans will be joined by Cazenovia, Amherst, and Salem State.
