YORK, PA – The York College men’s soccer team embarks on their 2009 season this Thursday as the Spartans travel to Italy for a preseason tour August 6 to August 15. The Green and White, who take this trip once every three years, will visit Rome, Florence, and Venice during their stay.
“We, as a program, have taken overseas trips several times, and each time has been a great experience,” Spartan Head Coach Mark Ludwig said. “This is a great opportunity for us to really connect as a team prior to the rigors of the season. The benefits of a trip like this can be seen deep into the year.”
The returning Spartans, along with several newcomers, will spend a significant portion of their trip taking in the cultural experiences of some of Italy’s greatest cities.
“This could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these guys,” Ludwig said. “We don’t want to make this into a soccer only excursion. We want our players to get out and enjoy Italy, take in the sights, and come away with a great experience.”
Soccer remains an important aspect, however, of the Spartans’ travel plans. While in Italy, the Spartans will square off against four Italian clubs that could provide York with stiff competition.
“The sides we play are each of good quality and will give us a tremendous measuring tool for what we need to do to get to where we want to be come September 1,” Ludwig commented. “Bottom line, I’m excited for us to get on the field and play.”
Following their trip to Italy, the Spartans will officially open
preseason camp on August 18 with their first 2009 match coming on
September 1 against Susquehanna.
