Four Goals Lead Spartans Over Wesley
DOVER, DE – The York College men’s soccer squad bested host Wesley Saturday afternoon 4-1 in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt in Dover, Del. The league victory now bumps the Spartans’ 2009 record to 10-1-2 (4-0-1 CAC) while the Wolverines fall to 7-6 (3-3 CAC).
The Spartans jumped on the scoreboard just over 14 minutes into the game. Junior forward Mike O’Connell (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) gave the Green and White the 1-0 advantage, tallying his sixth goal of 2009 14:08 into the match.
Justin Suchoski (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) put York up by two in the 36th minute as the senior buried his first tally of the season. Suchoski’s goal would prove to the game-winner as Wesley would add one of their own later in the match.
At the halftime break, the Green and White held an 8-3 advantage in shots while the squads were tied in corners at one apiece.
The Spartans added two more in the second stanza on goals by Aaron Good (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) and Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg, Pa./Warwick). Good recorded his first tally of 2009 courtesy of a penalty kick conversion in the game’s 58th minute, giving York the 3-0 lead.
Nuspahic’s score came with 24:54 remaining in the game, notching York’s fourth and final goal of the day. The sophomore’s sixth goal of the year ties him with O’Connell for the team lead this season.
Wesley ended the Spartans’ clean sheet bid in the 71st minute as Josh Chellah put the Wolverines on the board. Chellah’s goal would prove to be Wesley’s only score however, as the Spartans finished off the final 19 minutes unscathed.
For the match, York secured a 16-9 margin in shots while the hosts led in corners 6-1. The Spartans did well to defend the Wolverines’ five corners in the frame not allowing a single shot on any of Wesley’s five second frame corners.
Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) picks up the win in the Spartan net as he made a pair of saves over his 65:06 of work. Sophomore Kyle Connolly (Stratham, Pa./Exeter) relieved Hock and played the final 24:54, making one stop. The Wolverines also split the goalkeeping duties as Nick Talarico started and worked the first 70:56 as he made five saves. Tom Mikulski finished off the final 19:04 as he made a single stop.
The Spartans have a quick turnaround as they return to action on Monday, October 12, with a home match against Rutgers-Camden. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:00 pm start from York’s Graham Field.
