It is the opening round of the NCAA tournament, as the Cazenovia College Wildcats are getting set to battle it out against the York College Spartans. My name is Matt Clark and I will be taking you through all of today’s action. Stay tuned for the latest updates of today’s game.
The York College Spartans have officially beaten the Cazenovia Wildcats 6-0. York recorded 12 shots with seven corners and Cazenovia recorded three shots with one corner. Yorks extends their record to 16-1-4 and Cazenovia ends their season with a final record of 12-7-1.
It is not Thanksgiving yet, but Lansing should be thankful for his Spartan teammates as he records his second goal of the game and his season goal of the season. Seth Hurley was cred ited for the assist as the Spartans extend their lead to 6-0 with under a minute left to play.
About 10 minutes after Mike Lansing dished out an assist it was his turn to tally on a goal for the Spartans, giving him his first goal of the season and York's fifth of the game. Brett Sauerberger took a free kick from 3 yards behind the right side of the 18 as it deflected into the lap of Lansing.
Spartan goal by #25 Matt Swiderski with 22:44 minutes remaining giving his squad a 4-0 advantage. Michael Lansing sends a deep lofting ball into the box that found Swiderski in just the right spot inside the six box as he was able to place it into the back of the net. Lansing was credited for the assist as Swiderski picked up his second goal of the year. The Spartan reserves continue to play some quality minutes for Coach Ludwig.
York goes back to their bench with under 30 minutes left in the first half as 10 of their 11 starters are out of the game. The only remaining starter in the game is senior defender Scott Becker who could possibly be left in due to his leadership.
Terrific save by Cazenovia keeper Riley Battaglini as be saves a blast off the foot of Jon Port from about 40 yards out.
Much of the same story here in the second half. York remains on the attack while Cazenovia are kept on their heels. A few chances early in the half for the Spartans but nothing too dangerous.
York's men soccer team has allowed more than one goal twice all
season, giving up two against Salisbury and two against
Rutgers-Camden. Based on those stats it is not looking good for the
Wildcats as they by three.
The score at halftime is York College 3, Cazenovia 0. The Spartans have recorded seven shots on goal with three corner kicks while the Wildcats have one shot on goal and one corner kick opportunity.
York finds themselves with another solid scoring chance as Taylor Brummitt rips a ball to the head of Mike O'Connell but not in a good way as the ball ricochets and sails wide. York has sent the remainder of their offensive unit to the bench as many of their reserves have taken the field.
Spartan goal by #18 Antonio Bua as he finds himself on the scorecard for the second time today. Bua's goal comes with 12:43 remaining in the first half as Jon Ports lays a ball across the six that Bua is able to burry in the top right corner of the goal. That is Bua’s sixth goal of the year, giving York a commanding 3-0 lead as they continue to dominate possession during the match.
York has been playing possession in the middle of the field but has been called for a few consecutive offside calls on threatening through balls. Though on there first attacking plays after the offside, York creates a few near goal opportunities from Andy Stromberg.
Spartan goal by #8 Jon Ports with 24:09 remaining in the first half to give York a 2-0 lead. The opportunity was created as Lucas Emil fired a shot from 35 yards out that deflected off the keeper right onto the feet of Ports as he was able to tuck it into the right side of the net.
York continues to put pressure on early as Antonio Bua, Mike Gill, and Jon Ports all take solid shots on goal. In my own personal estimates York has held position for 75 percent of the match.
Spartan goal by #18 Antonio Bua with 33:54 remaining in the half. That marks the first goal of the tournament for the Spartans as they take an early lead in the contest. That was Bua's fifth goal of the season as he was able to collect a ball at his head inside the box and tap it over the keeper's head.
The first corner kick of the game comes with
under 37 minutes remaining in the first half for the Spartans.
Solid opportunity but they were not able to get enough on it as it
sails over to the sideline.
Through the early stages of the game,
Cazenovia has kept approximately 10 of their 11 players behind the
ball at all times. Curious to see how much offensive pressure the
Wildcats will attain throughout the match.
This is the first ever NCAA tournament
appearance made by the Wildcats, while this will mark the fifth
time in school history for the Spartans. Rosters have been
announced, National Anthem has been sung, and the game is about to
It is currently 53 degrees with a few sprinkles falling from the sky but that should not prevent there from being an electric atmosphere at Graham Field. Both teams are warming up on the field with 18 minutes remaining until game time.
