York's First Men's Soccer CAC Champions to be Honored on Saturday

YORK, PA – The York College men’s soccer team hosts Christopher Newport University this Saturday in a 3:00 pm non-conference match. The #3 Spartans will square off with the #4 Captains in a fierce battle of nationally-ranked squads.

At halftime, York’s 1998 men’s soccer team will be honored as they posted the first Capital Athletic Conference championship in Spartan soccer history. That team registered a solid 16-4-1, which at the time was the best single season record since the inception of the program in 1968.

Led by Pat Massa in his 18th and final year as York’s head coach, the Spartans went 7-0-1 over their final eight games including three straight wins in the conference tournament. The Green and White topped then Salisbury State University 2-1 to secure their first league title.

York posted numerous firsts in 1998, as a record five Spartans were named to the All-CAC squad that year including four first-team picks. Michael Biazzo, Joe Gossard, Chris Showers, and Eric York nabbed first-team accolades while Matt Shealer landed on the second-team.
