Spartan Men's Soccer Advances to the Second Season

YORK, PA-For the fourth consecutive season, the York College men’s soccer squad has earned a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament as the brackets were announced Monday morning by the NCAA. The Spartans, who spent a majority of the season ranked second in the country, earned a first round bye courtesy of their 18-0-1 record. The Spartans will host the winner of Thursday’s first round game between Ithaca and Johns Hopkins. That second round game will be at Graham Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans, who won the regular season Capital Athletic Conference crown, have advanced to the Elite Eight in the last two season as they fell to Wheaton two years ago in penalty kicks and were eliminated by eventual national champion Middlebury last year, 2-0. It is the second time in school history that the Spartans will play host to a second round tournament contest. Two years ago, the Spartans hosted Hobart in the second round. York would go on to host a four-team sectional that year.
York is no stranger to a number of teams in the draw. The Spartans have faced eight of the 57 other teams in the tournament. York faced Medaille, Messiah, Virginia Wesleyan, Christopher Newport, Johns Hopkins, Susquehanna, Rutgers-Camden, and Salisbury during the regular season. Christopher Newport, Messiah and Salisbury were the only three teams of that group to score on the green and white. The Spartans beat Christopher Newport 4-1 and then defeated Salisbury and Messiah by identical 2-1 scores. All three of those contests occured on the road.
The Spartan defense been outstanding all season as they outscored their 19 opponents 59-3 including a perfect 27-0 at Graham Field. The Spartan defense is currently riding a scoreless streak of 618:50 as they have not allowed a goal since the win over Messiah on October 8. York had a streak of 604:15 earlier this year as they have notched 16 shutouts this season.
Game time for Sunday’s second round contest will be established later this week.
