Spartans Soar past Eagles on Senior Day
York, Pa. – The #2 York College men’s soccer team defeated #23 Mary Washington 4-0 on senior day at Graham Field, Saturday afternoon. The Spartans improve to 15-0 and 5-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference while Mary Washington falls to 8-4-2 and 4-1-1 in the CAC. With the victory the Spartans sit perched atop the standings of the highly competitive CAC with the regular season winding down.
The Spartans controlled play throughout the opening minutes of the contest. The Spartans netted their first goal in just the 10th minute as junior Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) intercepted a Mary Washington pass then neatly placed a through ball to freshman Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg, Pa./ Warwick). Nuspahic then recorded his tenth goal of the season, slipping the ball past the keeper just inside the right post.
Just ten minutes later, junior Aaron Good (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown Area) collected the ball after a free kick and served it to the back post where junior Scott Becker (Hockessin, Del. / Salesianum) slotted the ball into the side netting creating a comfortable 2-0 lead.
At the half the Spartans had a 4-3 advantage in shots while the Eagles held a slight 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Spartans got their third goal of the day just three minutes into the second half as Ports collected a ball at the top of the box from sophomore Adam Good (Elizabethtown, Pa./ Elizabethtown Area), bodied his defender, turned and ripped a shot past Eagle goalkeeper Emmet Rutkowski.
In the 58th minute, the Spartans finished their scoring when junior Lucas Emil (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) blasted a shot from the top of the six yard box to far left post giving the junior his fifth tally of the season. Nuspahic slipped a pass to the wide open Emil, who promptly recorded his fifth tally of the year.
Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa. /Pennsbury) recorded his twelfth victory of the season in goal while stopping two saves. Junior Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md. /Sherwood) and senior Kyle Brooten (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) both saw time in net, with Hock stopping one shot. Rutkowski played all 90 minutes for the eagles and had three saves.
The Spartans held a 9-6 advantage in shots on the day, while each team had five corner kicks.
The Spartans host Wesley College this Wednesday in a CAC matchup that will help in determining the regular season champion as they sit 1 and 2 in the conference, respectively. Game time at Graham Field is set for 4:00 pm.
