Chris Ports Named Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week

YORK, PA - York College men’s soccer senior standout Chris Ports (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) was selected as the York College Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week for the first week of the 2008 season. Ports tallied twice and registered one assist over the weekend as he led the Spartans to a pair of victories and the VCAM/CNU Tournament title at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.

After being sidelined by injury last season, Ports came out strong in his first set of matches. On Friday’s game against #14 Virginia Wesleyan, Ports scored an insurance goal late in the contest to secure the Spartans first victory of the season. On Saturday evening against host Christopher Newport, Ports recorded his first assist of the year on a Mike O’Connell (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) score in the ninth minute of play. In the second frame, Ports found the back of the net himself in the game’s 77th minute as the Spartans would go on to claim a 4-1 victory.

Ports, who currently ranks second on York’s all-time assists list, has 31 career helpers and is four away from tying the top mark of 35 set by Joe Gossard from 1997-2000.

Ports and the Spartans return to action Saturday, September 6, as they host Medaille. York’s first home match of the season is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
