Spartan Men Climb to Number One

YORK, PA-The York College men’s soccer team ascended to the top spot of the National Division III Men’s Soccer poll as the newest poll was released Tuesday evening. The Spartans, who are 1-0 after defeating Albright 7-0 in their season opener Saturday, are riding a 41-match unbeaten streak while their defensive scoreless streak now stands at 945:05 after Saturday’s whitewashing.

The number one ranking is the first in the history of the York College athletic department. No Spartan team has ever achieved a number one ranking in a team sport.

The Spartans earned 21 of a possible 25 first place votes after previous number one Messiah fell to Greensboro College 1-0 on Friday. York has 619 points, easily outdistancing second ranked Johns Hopkins as the Blue Jays accumulated 571 points in the voting.

Spartan head coach Mark Ludwig is happy with the ranking but understands it’s in-season value.

“It’s nice recognition for the program we have built,” says Ludwig. “However, it is far more important to me that we are there at the end of the season.”

The Spartan women’s team moved up to 18th after starting the season 25th in the preseason poll. The Spartans went 2-0 during the Bridgewater College tournament as they downed Widener 6-0 on Saturday and McDaniel 5-1 on Sunday. The 18th spot is the highest ranking for the 12-year history of the program.

The men’s team returns to action on Wednesday afternoon as they host Gettysburg College in a 4:00 pm tilt. Gettysburg was one of three teams to tie the Spartans last year as the squads played 110 scoreless minutes last October in Gettysburg. The women’s team opens their CAC campaign on Wednesday as they travel to Hood to face the Blazers at 4:00 pm in Frederick, MD.
