YORK, PA-York College is proud to announce that, for the second week in a row, men’s soccer player Jon Ports has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week. Ports captured last week’s award with his stellar play and followed it up with an even better week this past seven day period.
Ports, a sophomore forward from Baltimore, MD and McDonogh High School, led the Spartans to a 2-0 week as they defeated #3 Messiah 2-1 on Tuesday followed by a 4-1 victory at Wesley on Friday. The Spartans improve to 14-1 overall and 6-1 in the CAC.
Ports continued his outstanding play with the first goal of the game, 21 seconds into the second half against Messiah. He then had a hand in all four goals in the win over Wesley. Ports scored the game’s first goal just 4:08 into the match. He then notched the game-winner in the 41st minute. Port then assisted on the Spartans’ third and fourth goals to lift the Spartans to their fifth straight win. For the week, Ports had eight points on three goals and a pair of assists. He had a hand in five of the Spartans’ six goals for the week.
Spartan head coach Mark Ludwig says his sophomore standout has stepped up.
“Jon had a tremendous week,” states Ludwig. “He played 90 hard minutes against Messiah and then comes back three days later and has a hand in all four of our goals at a tough conference opponent. He continues to perform at an extremly high level and elevate his teammates.”
For the season, Ports leads the Spartans in scoring with 37 points on 13 goals and 11 assists. He has seven game-winning goals for the Spartans.
Ports is the son of Jim and Linda Ports and is a Business
