YORK, PA-York College is proud to announce that men’s soccer player Jon Ports has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for October 1-7, 2007.
Ports, a sophomore forward from Baltimore, MD and McDonogh High School, led the Spartans to a 3-0 week as the Spartans defeated Gallaudet, 11-0 on Monday, Marymount, 4-0 on Wednesday, and St. Mary’s, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. The three wins lift the Spartans to 12-1 for the year and 5-1 in the CAC. York is currently ranked sixth in the nation according to d3kicks.com.
Ports began the week with a goal and an assist in the victory over Gallaudet. Ports scored his lone goal on just one shot as he played just 20 minutes in the game. In the victory over Marymount, Ports picked up York’s first goal in the fifth minute of the game and then notched an assist later in the contest. In the win over St. Mary’s, Ports scored the game-tying goal in the 87th minute and then assisted on the game-winner 54 seconds into overtime. For the week, Ports had nine points on three goals and three assists as the Spartans are one half game back of first place in the CAC.
Spartan head coach Mark Ludwig is happy to have the transfer from the University of Maryland on his squad.
“Jon brings a dangerous and composed presence to our attack,” states Ludwig. “He has been outstanding for us all season long.”
For the season, Ports leads the Spartans in scoring with 29 points on 10 goals and nine assists. He has six game-winning goals for the Spartans.
