Jon Ports Selected NSCAA First-Team All-American
YORK, PA - The York College men’s soccer team received yet more outstanding news after their stellar 21-3-1 campaign, as sophomore Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md. / McDonogh) was selected as a 2007 first-team All-American according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The honor is the third in the past two years for the Spartan program as brother Chris Ports (Baltimore, Md. / John Carroll) and Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md. / Patapsco) were both NSCAA first-team choices last season.
Ports had an outstanding year in his first season with the Spartans. After transferring from the University of Maryland following his freshman season, Ports blossomed in his second year of collegiate soccer. The sophomore tallied 15 goals to go along with a Capital Athletic Conference-leading 16 assists. Ports’ 16 helpers in a single season set a new program record for the Spartans besting the previous mark of 14. His exploits led to a first-team All-CAC selection and CAC Player-of-the-Year honors. All-South Region accolades have yet to be released.
Ports’ versatility proved vital to the York squad as he spent time both at forward and in the midfield. His constant work rate and incredible play-making ability fueled the potent Spartan offense that notched 83 goals over 25 contests and advanced into the NCAA Elite Eight.
“Jon was the engine of our attack this season,” Spartan head coach Mark Ludwig said. “He was an extremly versatile player for us and performed exceptionally well wherever he played. I am delighted to see Jon receive this well-deserved honor for both him and the team.”
