DOVER, DEL-The York College men’s soccer team continued to roll as the Spartans won their fifth straight with a 4-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Wesley College on Friday night in Dover, Del. The Spartans improve to 14-1 overall and 6-1 in the CAC. The Wolverines fall to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in the league.
The Spartans struck early as sophomore standout Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) continued his great play with an unassisted goal just 4:08 into the game. Ports struck again in the 41st minute as the forward received a pass from Kurt Lane (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) and lifted a shot over the head of Wesley keeper Nick Talarico from 15 yards out. The second goal lifted Ports’ season total to 13.
The Wolverines trimmed the Spartan lead to 2-1 on Craig Taswell’s goal in the 63rd minute.
York responded with a Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) goal in the 87th minute. Ports earned the assist on the goal. Senior Matt Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) capped the scoring in the 89th minute as Ports had the assist. Ports finished the game with a hand in all four goals with two tallies and two assists as his season point total now stands at 37 through 15 matches.
The Spartans finished the game outshooting the Wolverines 23-7 while they also held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
York’s Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) earned the win in net with two saves in his 90 minutes of work. Talarico went the distance in goal for Wesley as he recorded seven saves.
York, who is ranked fourth in the d3kicks.com poll, returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to #6 Johns Hopkins University for a showdown of nationally ranked squads. Kick off is set for 7:00 pm in Baltimore.
