Spartans Cruise into CAC Championship Match
YORK, PA-The York College men’s soccer team put together one its most complete efforts of the year as they defeated Villa Julie College 8-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in York. The Spartans, who are currently ranked second in the nation, improve to 19-1 overall while the Mustangs fall to 8-10-1.
The Spartans wasted little time in opening the scoring as Matt Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) struck a beautiful shot about seven yards beyond the box that found the netting in the upper left 90 for the Spartan goal. Detzel’s goal was his fourth of the season and came just 3:04 into the contest.
The Spartans second goal came just over 11 minutes later as Justin Suchoski (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) carried the ball down the sideline. He fed Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md. /McDonogh) who drove the end line before he created an easy chance for Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) who tapped the ball home for a goal. Ports and Mancuso combined again in the 21st minute for YCP. Ports created another scoring chance as he drove into the box, drawing defenders before sliding the ball to Mancuso giving the senior had another easy shot on goal.
The Spartan offensive onslaught continued in the 27th minute with Ports in the middle of the action again. The sophomore chipped to ball to the head of senior Charlie Barrett (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Barrett knocked home the header for the 4-0 Spartan lead. York closed out the first half scoring with a goal from Mike O’Connell (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) as Mike Nantais (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) served the ball into the box, the ball hit off a defender and O’Connell sent it home for the 5-0 lead.
The second half was much of the same as the Spartans kept the vast majority of play in their offensive end. O’Connell tallied his second goal of the game and fifth of the year in the 65th minute. Van Hare (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) scored in the 84th minute and Brian Carr (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) closed out the scoring in the final minute with a long shot off a loose ball. Carr’s shot nicked the bottom of the crossbar and deflected into the goal.
The green and white finished the contest with a 37-4 bulge in total shots and a 23-3 margin in shots on goal. York had three corners to one for the visiting Mustangs.
Three Spartan keepers combined to post the shutout as Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) played the opening 45 minutes. Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) started the second half and played 32 minutes as he recorded York’s three saves. Kyle Brooten (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) covered the final 13 minutes and did not need to make a save. Eric Lowman, the Mustangs’ outstanding goalkeeper, went the distance in net making 14 saves while he allowed the eight Spartan goals. Coming into today’s match, Lowman had allowed just 17 goals in 1,300 minutes of action, good for a goals against average of 1.18.
The Spartans move on to face Salisbury in the CAC championship game for the fourth time in the last five years. The Spartans have won the last two CAC championships as they downed the Sea Gulls 1-0 at Salisbury in 2005 while they defeated Mary Washington last year to capture the championship. The championship match time will be determined on Wednesday. The Spartans and Sea Gulls have met the last seven consecutive years in the CAC tournament.
