The Spartans' Quest for a Three-Peat Falls Short

SALISBURY, MD - The York College men’s soccer team fell to Salisbury University 2-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference championship match Saturday afternoon.  The Sea Gulls (15-4-1) are the only squad to have defeated the Spartans (19-2) all season beating York 1-0 on September 29.

As a back-and-forth first half came to a close, Salisbury’s Kyle Sterling notched the game’s first tally off a feed from Ben DeLisle at 44:01.  Sterling collected the ball inside the penalty box before neatly slotting it inside the right post for his team-leading 15th goal.

Following the halftime break, Andrew Henciak gave the Sea Gulls a two-goal advantage when he tucked home his second score of the season.  In the 54th minute, Henciak hit a close ripper that forced York goalkeeper Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to make a tremendous save to keep the ball out of the net.  Unfortunately for the green and white, the subsequent rebound went right back to Henciak who made no mistake with his second opportunity.

Salisbury controlled most of the second half, as the Spartans could never seem to settle in to a comfort zone.  The Sea Gull defense effectively shut down York’s potent offense limiting Spartan attackers Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), and Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) to precious few quality opportunities.

For the match, the Spartans did outshoot the Sea Gulls 12-11 but only registered three shots on goal.  Salisbury held an 8-2 bulge in corner kicks on the afternoon.

Marks takes the loss in the Spartan net, notching four saves.  His counterpart, Greg Wellinghoff, only needed to make a pair of stops while the Sea Gull defense also picked up a team save in the match.

The victory earns Salisbury the CAC tournament championship and catapults them into the NCAA tournament, which begins next week.  York is now awaiting an at-large bid after a successful 2007 campaign.  The NCAA will publish the brackets for the national tournament Monday morning.  Please visit www.ycpspartans.com or www.ncaasports.com for NCAA tournament information.
