Five Spartans Land on All-South Region Squad
YORK, PA - In the wake of the news of Jon Ports’ (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) first-team All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the York College men’s soccer team landed five Spartans on the All-South Region squad released by the NSCAA. Ports, senior forward Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) and junior defender Evan Scheffey (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) earned first-team bids while senior defender Matt Beale (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and senior forward Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) were third-team choices. York’s five overall selections is the greatest number of honorees in program history.
The accolades keep rolling in for Ports who, along with being a first-team All-American and first-team All-South Region, was also the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year and All-CAC first-teamer. His 15 goals and 16 assists paced the York attack and helped catapult the Spartans to their second consecutive Elite Eight berth and final ranking of fifth in the country.
Wheeler’s third All-South nod, his second on the first-team, follows a senior campaign which saw him tally eleven goals and distribute eleven assists. The forward finishes one of the most decorated careers in Spartan soccer history. In addition to his trio of regional honors, Wheeler was a 2006 NSCAA and d3kicks.com first-team All-American, 2006 CAC Player of the Year, a two-time CAC first-team selection. His 45 career goals and 116 points rank him second all-time in York’s record books.
Scheffey, a junior captain, continues to lead the stellar green and white defense that allowed a measly 0.74 goals per game. The defender’s strong tackles, knowledge of the game, and leadership abilities have allowed him to become a defensive linchpin for the Spartans. In addition to his first regional award, Scheffey was named a 2006 d3kicks.com third-team All-American, and is now a two-time All-CAC first-team pick.
Beale, one of the top defenders to ever step on the pitch in a Spartan uniform, completes his York career notching a third-team selection. Since settling into his left-defender position as a sophomore, he has been part of a defensive unit that has produced a 0.67 goals against average over the past three seasons. The All-South choice is Beale’s third as a Spartan, previously garnering second- and third-team bids. The senior also captured All-CAC accolades as he landed on the first-team in 2005 and the second-team in 2006.
In his lone Spartan season, Mancuso made a major offensive impact for the green and white as he burst on the scene with 14 goals and seven assists. Included in his 14 scores are a pair of game-winners. Mancuso’s exploits also earned him All-CAC second-team honors in addition to his regional award.
The numerous post-season accolades are not only a testament to these talented individuals but also to the entire squad.
“Landing five players on the regional team is definitely
the most we have ever had,” Spartan head coach Mark Ludwig
said. “I believe it is a well deserved honor for each player
and the team as a whole.”
