Explosive First Half Powers Spartans Past Seahawks

YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse team used a huge first half to post an 18-11 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary's College in the Spartans' regular season home finale in York.

The Spartans improve to 13-3 overall as they have tied the school record for wins in a season. They are now 5-1 in the CAC as they have clinched the second seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Seahawks, who are the defending conference champions, fall to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the league.

The Spartans jumped on the Seahawks early with two goals in the first 4:07 of the game. Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) and Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied the opening goals of the game for York. The Green and White pushed it to 3-0 with a second Krolus goal at the 5:49 mark.

The Seahawks got on the board with a Greg Louzan goal 40 seconds after Krolus' second tally but York closed out the period with two goals from junior All-American Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) as York took a 5-1 lead to the second quarter.

Hutson completed the natural hat trick to start the second 15 minutes of play as he notched a man-up goal just 17 seconds into the quarter. Gamble pushed the Spartan lead to 7-1 with an unassisted goal less than a minute later as the Green and White continued to pressure the Seahawk defense. Conor Jordan stopped the York run with an unassisted goal at the 13:13 mark but York again closed out the quarter with two straight goals to take a 9-2 lead to the intermission.

The Seahawks outscored the Spartans 4-3 in the third quarter as York carried a 12-6 lead to the fourth quarter.

The final period of play was a high-scoring 15 minutes as the Spartans opened the quarter with goals from Krolus and Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) as the lead grew to 14-6.

St. Mary's notched a pair of goals but York scored three of the next four goals to increase the lead to 18-9 with 4:44 left in the game. The Seahawks closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the final 3:18 to provide for the Spartans' final seven-goal margin of victory.

Gamble had a huge day for the Green and White as the sophomore poured in five goals with one assist for six points. Gamble scored his five goals on just six shots. Hutson added five points on three goals and two assists. Hutson's third goal was also the 150th of his Spartan career. Krolus was outstanding with a career-high four goals while he also had four ground balls and a caused turnover. Davis continues to push his school-record total for season assists higher as the junior attack dished out three more helpers and also scored a goal. Davis now has 36 assists for the year. James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added two goals and two assists to the Spartan attack while Chris Varela (Easton, Pa./Easton) chipped in a goal and two assists. Dakota Randall (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) was the seventh Spartan to record multiple points as he had a goal and an assist.

Sophomore defender Josh Kluver (Abington, Pa./Abington) was outstanding as he caused a career-high six turnovers while he also scooped up six ground balls. Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) won 12 face offs and notched a team-high seven ground balls.

Ben Love powered the Seahawks as he tallied six points on three goals and three assists while he also had three ground balls. Stewart D'Ambrogi added four points on two goals and two assists while Erin Simon contributed two goals and an assist. Jordan chipped in two goals while Nate Babcock tallied a goal and an assist.

Cody Tidwell won 10-of-13 at the face off X as he collected eight ground balls. Teddy Secor won 11-of-20 at the X and notched a game-high nine ground balls.

Sophomore Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned the win as he notched nine saves in his 53:01 of work. He improves to 23-6 for his Spartan career with the victory.

Zack Blewett went the distance in goal for St. Mary's as he allowed 18 goals and made 11 saves in the loss.

The Spartans outshot the Seahawks 32-30 while the Seahawks had a 43-37 edge in ground balls. The Seahawks also won 21-of-33 face offs but committed 22 turnovers to just 15 for YCP. St. Mary's was just 12-of-17 on the clear while York was 19-for-21. The Spartans were also outstanding on the man-up as they converted 5-of-6 opportunities.

The Spartans conclude their 2014 regular season with a trip to Christopher Newport to face off against the Captains. First face off is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Newport News, Va.
