FROSTBURG, MD – The York College men's lacrosse team posted a crucial 8-7 Capital Athletic Conference win over Frostburg State University on Wednesday night in Frostburg, MD.
The Spartans, who are ranked 19th in the nation, improve to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the CAC. The Bobcats fall to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the league with the loss.
The Spartans jumped on top early as sophomore standout Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) scored the first two goals of the game, tallying goals at the 8:08 mark and again at 6:38. The Bobcats trimmed their deficit in half with a Spenser Love goal with 4:09 left in the quarter.
The second quarter scoring picked up quickly as York's James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) put York up 3-1 with a goal at the 13:34 mark. Spartan All-American Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) pushed the York lead to 4-1 with a goal just over four minutes later.
The Bobcats hit the Spartans with a three-goal spurt over the next six minutes, tying the game at four with 2:14 left in the half. York recaptured the lead with a mere 12 seconds remaining in the stanza as Hutson scored his second of the game off a pass from Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster).
As offensive as the second quarter was, the third quarter featured gritty defense as the squads locked in a low scoring period. Hutson and Davis hooked up for a third time in the game with 4:32 left in the quarter to give York a 6-4 lead. That two goal margin would be short-lived as Tate Rolland found the back of the cage with 1:06 left in the quarter.
The fourth quarter was back and forth as Andrew Thomas (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored just 16 seconds into the stanza, giving York a 7-5 lead. Love answered for the Bobcats 1:41 later to again draw the hosts to within one.
Gamble tallied the eventual game-winner with a man-up goal off a Davis pass with 11:15 left in regulation. The Bobcats cut the Spartan lead to one thanks to a Greg Bourne goal with 6:48 left in the game.
Frostburg would pepper Spartan goalie Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) in the last three minutes of the game but the sophomore stood tall, as he recorded three saves to preserve the key road win.
Davis was a huge playmaker for York as the junior dished out five assists in the win. Hutson and Gamble each tallied three goals for the Green and White. Senior captain Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) grabbed team-high five ground balls while he also had an assist in the win.
Greg Bourne and Love led the Bobcats with three points as they each had two goals and an assist. Rolland added a goal and an assist while Zach Douglas led the Bobcats with five ground balls.
Abney earned the win, as he was again fantastic with 14 saves in his 57:38 of work. He improves to 9-3 for the year and now has 19 career wins for York. Tyler Haines suffered the loss for Frostburg as he matched Abney's effort with 14 saves in his 59:56 of action.
The Bobcats outshot the Spartans 37-30 while they also held a 35-30 margin in ground balls. Frostburg won 10-of-19 face offs while both teams committed 10 turnovers in the game.
The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon when they host Southern Virginia in a non-conference contest. First face off is scheduled for 4:30 pm in York.
