Hutson and Lowe Power Spartans Past Saints

ARLINGTON, VA – The York College men's lacrosse team snapped their two-game losing skid with a 13-9 Capital Athletic Conference win over Marymount University in Arlington, VA on a rainy and raw Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the CAC. The Saints fall to 7-3 overall while they are now 0-2 in the league.

The Green and White jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the opening quarter. Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield), James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), and Tyler Davis (Westminster, Md./Finksburg) scored for York as they had a two goal lead with 5:28 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Saints knotted the game at three with goals from Jimmy Wendell and Kellen McCarthy inside the last 2:12 of the opening quarter.

York dominated the second quarter as the Spartans ripped off three straight goals. Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) started the scoring barrage with an unassisted goal at the 13:37 mark. Sophomore Joseph Joseph (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) pushed the Spartan lead to 5-3 with a goal off a feed from Krolus with 12:28 left in the quarter. Hutson recorded a man-up goal with 4:30 left in the half as Davis fed him for the tally.

Marymount stopped the bleeding with a McCarthy goal with only 13 seconds left in the half as York took a 6-4 lead to the intermission.

York got off to another great start in the third quarter as they hit the Saints with four straight goals over the first nine-plus minutes of the quarter. Lowe, Andrew Thomas (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford), Josh Kluver (Abington, Pa./Abington), and Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) scored to push the Spartan lead to 10-4 with 5:17 left in the third.

The Saints cut into the lead with a pair of goals late in the third quarter as York took a 10-6 lead to the fourth.

The teams traded goals back and forth in the fourth. The Spartans got goals from Hutson at 11:59 and 9:13 while Lowe scored at 4:35 as they recorded the four-goal win.

Hutson, the reigning CAC Player of the Year, led York with four goals as he now has a team-high 30 goals for the season. Hutson also had three ground balls in the win for York. Lowe added three goals and an assist for four points. Krolus had a fantastic game as the senior captain had a goal and two assists while he also had a team-high eight ground balls. Thomas chipped in a goal, four ground balls and a caused turnover for York. Davis had a goal, an assist, and five ground balls in the win.

Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) went 12-of-22 at the X for the Green and White.

McCarthy led the Saints with two goals while Connor Kellogg had three points on a goal and a pair of assists. Jimmy Wendell and Tyler DaSilva each added two points for Marymount. Wendell had a goal and an assist while DaSilva had two helpers. DaSilva added a team-high eight assists for the Saints.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallson) earned his eighth win of the year as he made five saves in 54:56 of work in the Spartan net. Christian Koch (Sykesville, Md./Century) played the other 5:04 in goal as he registered one save.

Derek DiGiovanni played 49:46 in goal for Marymount as he allowed 11 Spartan goals with five saves. Jeremy Larkin played the final 10:14 and he made four saves with two goals allowed.

York outshot the Saints 40-18 while they held a 32-27 edge in ground balls.

The Spartans won 14-of-24 face offs while the Green and White went 16-for-16 in the clear.

York returns to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Frostburg State to face the Bobcats in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. First face off in Frostburg, MD is set for 7:00 pm.
