Gamble's Big Night Lifts #12 Spartans to Seventh Straight Win

SCRANTON, PA – The 12th ranked York College Spartan men's lacrosse squad won their school-record seventh straight game as they edged Marywood University Pacer squad 10-7 in non-conference play in Scranton, Pa.

The Spartans improve to 7-1 overall while Marywood falls to 3-5.

The Pacers opened the scoring with a goal from Stephen Deiner just under five minutes into the game. It took the Spartans over eight minutes to respond and notch the equalizer as Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) banged home a pass from Chris Varela (Easton, Pa./Easton) with just over three minutes left in the quarter. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead with just seven seconds left in the quarter as sophomore Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) scored his 19th goal of the year to give York the lead. The Gamble goal came off a pass from junior Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster).

Deiner struck again for the Pacers as he opened the second quarter scoring with a tally off a Cody Bachman pass at the 12:23 mark. Hutson put the Green and White back on top just under three minutes later as Gamble found the junior for his 22nd goal of the season. Senior James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) pushed the York lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal 47 seconds after Hutson's goal. The Pacers' Derek Schmidt trimmed York's lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal 3:39 prior to the break. Gamble struck again just before the half as he received a pass from Lowe and drove home the opportunity to give the Green and White a 5-3 lead at the break.

Gamble opened the third quarter scoring with his third goal of the night as he notched an unassisted tally just over five minutes into the quarter. Gamble had a hand in the next Spartan goal as Hutson notched his third goal of the night with 7:10 left in the third.

The Pacers went on a three-goal run to cut the Spartan lead to 7-6 with 12:08 left in regulation. Varela put the Spartans back up two off a pass from Davis with 9:24 showing on the clock. Lowe made it 9-6 with his tenth goal of the year with 5:44 remaining.

Marywood capitalized on a Spartan penalty with 3:44 left in the game as Bachman scored his seventh goal of the season, cutting York's lead to just two. Sophomore Joseph Joseph (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) capped the scoring with a goal off a Davis pass to provide the Spartans with their final three-goal margin of victory.

The Spartans finished the game holding a 33-29 edge in shots and a 31-21 margin in ground balls. The Spartans won 11-of-20 face offs for the game.

Gamble had a big night for the Green and White as he tallied three goals and had two assists for five points. Gamble did his damage on just four shots for York. Hutson added three goals, as he is now just one point away from tying Josh Gamble for the top spot on the Spartans' all-time scoring list. Hutson now has 174 points on 132 goals and 42 assists in his 41 career games. Davis dished out three assists for three points while Lowe had two goals and an assist for three points.

Freshman Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) won 11-of-20 at the face off X while he also collected a career-high 10 ground balls.

Derek Schmidt led the Pacers with three goals while Deiner added a pair of tallies. Bachman contributed a goal and an assist for Marywood.

Sophomore Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned the win in net as he allowed four goals in his 54:53 of work. He registered nine saves in his seventh win of the year. James Anderson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) played 5:07, allowing three goals while he made three saves.

Joe Magargal played the first 59:30 of the game, allowing all ten of the Spartan goals while he notched 13 saves. Daghan Hart played the final 30 seconds of the game and did not face a Spartan shot.

The Spartans will put their win streak on the line on Saturday when they host #2 Salisbury University in a key Capital Athletic Conference contest. First face off is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
