ASHLAND, VA – York College sophomore midfielder Blake Bing (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored a career-high six goals as the Spartans outlasted host Randolph-Macon 15-13 in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Virginia.
The Spartans improve to 4-1 overall while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-4.
After a scoreless opening 10 minutes of play, York's Chris Varela (Easton, Pa./Easton) began the scoring with a goal off a James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) pass at the 4:56 mark. The Yellow Jackets tied the game on a Tim Rowe unassisted goal just over a minute later.
The offensive pace picked up in the final three minutes of the opening quarter. York scored three times while the Yellow Jackets netted a goal as the Spartans took a 4-2 lead to the start of the second quarter.
Bing opened the second quarter scoring with his first goal of the game a minute into the period. The Yellow Jackets scored five of the next six goals of the game to take a 7-6 lead with 2:52 left before the half. Bing found the back of the net again, tying the game at seven but Jason Andrews scored for RMC with just 14 seconds left in the half to give the Yellow Jackets the 8-7 halftime lead.
The two teams traded goals to open the second half but York followed that with a five-goal run that gave the Spartans a 13-9 lead after three periods of play. Lowe, Joseph Joseph (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), Corey Cooke (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster), and Bing scored during the run as York seized control of the game.
The teams again traded goals to start the fourth before the Yellow Jackets went on a three-goal spurt over a four-minute stretch to draw to within a goal at 14-13 with 3:28 left in the game. Bing sealed the win with his sixth goal 36 seconds later as the Spartans notched their second road win of the year.
Bing finished his big day with seven points on his six goals and one assist. Freshman Dakota Randall (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) handed out a career-high five assists including three helpers on man-advantage goals for York. Lowe and Cooke each scored twice and handed out an assist while Davis had a goal and two assists for his three points.
Daniel Schuck (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) collected a career-high 12 ground balls while he also won 20-of-31 face offs. Senior defender Justin Gordon (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) notched a team-high two caused turnovers while he also had four ground balls.
Andrews led the Yellow Jackets with six points on three goals and three assists. Josh Merwin contributed four points on two goals and two assists while Justin Butler chipped in with three points on two goals and an assist. Rowe and Nick Benhoff added two goals. Benhoff also had five ground balls and won eight face offs for RMC.
Joey Bellavia (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) earned the win in goal as he improves to 2-0. Bellavia made eight saves for the Spartans. Jordan Devito registered 14 saves for the Yellow Jackets in his 60 minutes in net.
The Spartans outshot the Yellow Jackets 49-36 while they also had a significant 42-26 edge in ground balls. York converted 3-of-8 extra man opportunities while the Spartans won 20-of-32 face offs.
York concludes their season-high four game road trip on Wednesday evening when they open Capital Athletic Conference play at nationally ranked Salisbury University. First face off is set for 7:00 pm in Salisbury, Md.
