Comeback Bid Falls Just Short for Men's Lacrosse
YORK, Pa – The York College men's lacrosse team nearly pulled off an exciting comeback effort on Saturday afternoon but fell just short dropping a 10-9 result to visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland in Capital Athletic Conference action. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play while the Seahawks improve to 8-4 and 5-1 in the CAC.
Trailing by as much as four in the second half, the Green and White mounted a steady comeback over the final two quarters to slice into the Seahawk advantage. With just 34 seconds remaining in the contest, Tyler Hutson recorded his fourth goal of the game to bring the Spartans to within one at 10-9. St. Mary's Albert Mitchell won the ensuing faceoff but with just 13 seconds left York's Justin Gordon caused a Seahawk turnover that was collected by Hogan Ross. In breakneck fashion, the Green and White raced the ball toward the St. Mary's goal in an effort to knot the game at ten. Looking to make one final pass in front of the cage, the Spartans failed to connect allowing time to expire.
The Green and White did put forth a solid comeback effort during the latter frames. After the Seahawks' Taylor Cook put the visitors up 7-3 early in the second half, the Spartans put together a 5-2 run to cut the St. Mary's advantage to one, for the first time, at 9-8. That spurt began with a B.J. Blaker tally with 11:19 to play in the third. Tyler Davis and Seth Krolus each notched a pair during the 5-2 run, capped off by Davis' second of the day with 7:17 remaining in the fourth.
With York down only one, the Seahawks' Cook found the back of the net for the fourth time to give his squad a 10-8 lead, which set up the exciting final seconds.
St. Mary's controlled much of the beginning of the contest, opening up a 5-1 lead through the 10:41 mark of the second quarter.
For the game, York outshot their counterparts 31-24 while St. Mary's picked up 28 ground balls to the Spartans' 27.
Hutson tallied four goals and one assist for the Green and White to increase his team-leading season goals total to 33. Krolus also notched five points as he recorded two goals and three assists. Defensively, Ross caused four turnovers while Gordon registered two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Tyler Powell notched eight saves.
Cook led the St. Mary's offense with four goals while six Seahawks tallied one goal apiece. Mitchell posted a 15-for-19 day at the faceoff "X" and collected nine ground balls. Stu Wheeler takes the win the Seahawk cage as he made four stops while Zack Blewett also saw time between the pipes and made two saves.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, April 11, when they host Hood in a 3:30 pm Capital Athletic Conference tilt.
