ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The York College men's lacrosse team captured their second win of the season on Saturday, besting host Muhlenberg 10-4 in Allentown, Pa. The non-conference victory pushes the Spartans to 2-1 on the season while the Mules drop to 1-1.
A pair of rookies provided a significant portion of the offensive firepower for the Green and White as newcomers Tyler Davis netted three goals while Tyler Hutson registered two tallies and two assists. Through the first three contests, Hutson leads the squad with 12 points on nine goals and three helpers while Davis has contributed six points on five scores and one assist.
York opened a 3-1 lead in the first quarter as James Langton, Nick Bach, and Seth Krolus each posted tallies. That advantage held true throughout the second period as neither side found the back of the net, despite the Spartans owning an 8-4 advantage in shots during the frame.
It would prove period number three in which the Green and White pulled away from their hosts. Outscoring Muhlenberg 4-0 in the third quarter, Hutson netted his first goal of the game with 11:58 left in the frame courtesy of a Langton assist. Davis followed 2:07 later with his first as it was Hutson who provided the helper. Now owning a 5-1 lead, Krolus tallied his second of the day at the 7:14 mark before Davis ended the quarter with York's seventh goal. Off an assist from Andrew Thomas, Davis' second goal of the afternoon gave the Green and White a commanding 7-1 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
York's lead crested to a maximum of eight at 9-1 as Bach tallied with 7:54 to play, followed by Davis' third just 39 seconds later.
Muhlenberg scored back-to-back goals with less than six minutes to play, but Hutson brought that spurt to a halt with the Spartans' 10th and final goal of the day with 3:44 left. The Mules' Doug Rheiner finished the scoring with 3:10 left in the contest.
For the game, the Spartans owned a 41-37 edge in shots and went 2-for-6 in man-advantage opportunities.
Tyler Powell picked up the win in the cage as he recorded 11 saves including six in the first quarter and three in the fourth. Muhlenberg's James Fasola posted 16 stops for the hosts.
Returning to action on Wednesday, March 7, the Green and White venture back to Kinsley Field for their second home contest of the 2012 campaign. The Spartans are slated to welcome McDaniel to York in a 3:30 pm non-conference tilt.
