FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College men's lacrosse team suffered a 17-5 Capital Athletic Conference loss to host Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon. The Spartans finish their 2011 regular season campaign with a 10-5 mark including a 5-3 record in the CAC while the Eagles improve to 10-5 and 6-2 in league play. York now enters into CAC Tournament play this weekend as the #4 seed while Mary Washington is seeded third.
Evan Weiss led the 17-goal attack with four scores on the day while John Bohlinger, Sean Dacey, and Mark Bowler each notched three goals apiece.
The Eagles jumped out to a huge 9-0 lead through the first quarter, aided by a trio of Weiss scores. Mary Washington then extended that advantage to 10-0 with 12:42 left to play in the second frame.
York's B.J. Blaker got the Spartans on the board with his first of three tallies on the day with 10:09 remaining in the second quarter. John Dubois and Blaker would score additional goals for the Green and White in that second frame, yet Mary Washington went into halftime with a significant 12-3 lead.
That lead would prove enough for the hosts, as the Spartans were unable to mount a second half comeback.
Mary Washington scored five times in the latter half while the Green and White tallied a pair late in the fourth quarter, including a tally from Nick Bach.
Despite the loss, York remains in a position to host the first round of the CAC Tournament. The fourth-seeded Spartans are slated to host St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday at York's Kinsley Field. With game time has yet to be determined, check back to www.ycpspartans.com for up-to-date information.
