FREDERICK, Md. – The York College men's lacrosse team captured their second straight Capital Athletic Conference win as the bested host Hood College 9-2 on Wednesday. The triumph boosts the Spartans' 2011 record to 6-2 and 2-0 in league play while the Blazers fall to 3-4 and 0-2 in the CAC.
Jimmy Langton, who is having a tremendous year in his first season with the Green and White, netted the game's first two goals to put York up 2-0. His first came with 9:41 to play in the first while his second, via a B.J. Blaker assist, came with 6:24 to go in the opening frame.
Blaker followed his helper with a goal of his own with 3:29 showing on the first quarter clock. The talented junior would prove to have an outstanding performance against the Blazers totaling four points on three goals and one assist.
Hood's Doug Brisbane halted York's three-goal opening spurt in the first period but the Spartans still held a 3-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play.
Remarkably, over the next 30 minutes – the second and third quarters combined – only two goals were scored as the Spartans were the beneficiaries of both. The Green and White's Josh Gamble tallied the lone second quarter goal while John Dubois registered the only score in the third frame. Those two tallies gave the visitors a solid 5-1 lead heading into the fourth.
For as quiet as the previous two periods had been, the fourth looked like an offensive explosion as the squads combined for five scores.
Hood's Kris Miner opened the scoring with 10:30 remaining, effectively cutting the Spartans' lead to 5-2. That three-goal advantage became four just 2:12 later as Blaker finished off a Dubois assist with 8:18 to play.
Blaker later gave York a 7-2 lead when tallied his third of the day with 3:22 remaining. Gamble and Dubois finished off the Spartan scoring with a pair of late goals to bring the final result to 9-2.
On the day, Langton leads the Green and White with 19 goals this season while Blaker's three bumps him to 14 on the year. Gamble's four points on two goals and two assists gives him a team-best 28 for the year. Dubois had two goals, one helper, and went 5-for-7 in face-offs while picking up a team-high six ground balls.
Goalkeeper Tyler Powell picks up the victory in the Spartan net as he made 12 saves, including five in the fourth quarter alone. His 60 minutes of solid work improves his 2011 mark to 6-2 on the season.
York returns to action on Saturday, March 26, when they host CAC foe Marymount (Va.) in a 1:00 pm contest.
