ORLANDO, Fla. – The York College men's lacrosse squad captured their third straight win to open the season as they bested St. Vincent 14-7. The Spartan victory comes in their final game of their Spring Break trip to Florida as they move to a flawless 3-0 to begin the year while the Bearcats suffer their first loss of 2011 and drop to 2-1.
The story of the game proved to be the second quarter as the Green and White blitzed St. Vincent for six goals over the final 6:11 of the frame. Owning a 2-1 lead after the opening quarter, the Spartans relinquished the lead with 7:49 to play in the second as the Bearcats knotted the score at 2-2. However, beginning with John Dubois' tally with 6:11 left, the Green and White went on a scoring binge to end the first half.
Dubois backed up his first goal of the game with a second tally just 2:07 later. With 2:06 showing on the clock B.J. Blaker gave York a 5-2 advantage which increased to 6-2 just 13 seconds later when Adam Cooper buried his third tally of the 2011 campaign.
York kept the heat on throughout the final two minutes, scoring two more times before half. Jimmy Langton was integral in both goals as he assisted on Josh Gamble's with 45 seconds remaining and then scored one of his own off a Blaker helper with a mere 27 seconds left in the half. Langton's tally gave the Green and White an 8-2 advantage.
York would post six more tallies in the second half and only surrender four more to the Bearcats.
In total, Gamble notched a game-high four goals to increase his team-leading season mark to 11 tallies. Langton notched three scores for the Spartans while Dubois added a pair.
Defensively, the Spartans posted a bend-but-don't-break effort against the Bearcats. Despite St. Vincent's 42 shots in the game, Spartan goalkeeper Tyler Powell stood tall and put together a great performance, registering 14 saves over his 57:55 of work.
The Green and White return to action on Wednesday, March 9, when they travel to Washington College for a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt.
