Spartans Move to 2-0 with Triumph over Rollins
Face Offs Won
ORLANDO, Fla. – The York College men's lacrosse team kicked-off their spring break trip to Florida today, as they beat Division II opponent Rollins 18-11 on an unseasonably warm February day in Orlando. The Spartans improve to 2-0 while the Tars fall to 0-3 on the season.
The Spartans found themselves trailing 2-0 early as they were down with about 13 minutes left in the first quarter.
Sophomore James Lowe got the Spartans on the board however when scored the opening goal for the Spartans off an assist from John Dubois with 11:20 left in the first quarter. With about ten minutes left in the frame, Lowe would find the back of the net for a second time in the game, knotting the score at 2-. The Spartans struck again with about seven minutes left when junior B.J. Blaker scored the third goal for the Green and White. With about 30 seconds left in the game junior Jimmy Langton scored the Spartans fourth goal. However, it would be the Tars that held the first quarter advantage as they tallied five times in the frame to take a 5-4 lead after one.
Langton's second goal of the day would come just seconds into the second quarter to tie the game at 5-5. After the goal the Spartans would go about ten minutes without giving up another Rollins score. With 13 minutes left in the second quarter, Dubois scored his first goal of the game to bring the score to 6-5 Spartans.
The Spartans then went on a scoring barrage as they opened up a 10-6 lead to close the half. Senior Adam Cooper scored with 35 seconds remaining in the stanza to increase the Spartan lead to that 10-6 mark.
In the third quarter, the Green and White stretched their four-goal advantage to six as York tallied four times in the 15-minute period. Blaker would score again for the Spartans off an assist from Josh Gamble with 12:37 left in the third quarter. The Green and White scored three more times, including two from Dubois, to take a 14-8 lead into the fourth.
That 14-8 lead opened to 15-8 4:27 into the fourth quarter as Gamble would score the stanza's first goal, another man-up tally for the Spartans, off an assist by Langton. With just under 7 minutes to go in the game the Justin Aita scored the Green and White's third man-up goal of the game, this one off an assist by Blaker. About a minute later Gamble would net his third goal of the game as the Spartans took a 17-9 lead over the Tars. The Spartans would score their 18th and final goal of the game as Langton would find the back of the net off an assist from Junior Nick Back to put the Spartans up 18-9.
At the end of the game the Spartans held the lead in shots (43-24) and extra man opportunities (11-3). The Tars would go 20-31 in face-offs and would have a total of 35 turnovers in the game. The Spartans had five players score three goals each, and three of those players also had one assist.
York will look to continue their winning ways on Thursday, March 2, when they play St. Vincent's at 1:00 pm.
The Spartans return to Kinsley Field on March 12, where they will square off against Messiah at 1:00 pm.
