York, Pa. – York College senior Josh Gamble's goal with seven seconds left in regulation lifted the York College men's lacrosse team to a 12-11 non-conference win over Virginia Wesleyan in the Spartans' season opener on Saturday. The game was played in a brisk and consistent 30 mph wind as the Spartans improve to 1-0 while the Marlins fall to 0-2.
Sophomore Corey Cooke would score the Spartans first goal of the game with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. The goal was a result of a turnover caused by sophomore defender Nate Stewart.
The Spartans would begin the second quarter of the game down 2-1. Virginia Wesleyan's Kyle Wright scored to put the Marlins up 3-1, before the Spartans would begin their scoring onslaught.
Gamble would score his first goal of the 2011 season with twelve minutes left in the second quarter. Later in the quarter off an assist from Gamble, junior B.J. Blaker would score his first goal of the game to tie the game at 3-3 with about eleven minutes left to play in the second quarter.
The scoring streak for the Spartans would continue when sophomore James Lowe scored his first goal of the game and 2011 season with about eight and a half minutes left in the quarter. Gamble would score his second of the day off an assist from Blaker with eight minutes left in the second quarter. With about two minutes left in the second quarter, junior Jimmy Langton scored his first goal of the game. Gamble would score for a second time in the second quarter to lead the Spartans into half time leading 7-3.
The second half of the game would be a battle for momentum as the teams continued to fight for the remaining thirty minutes.
Senior Adam Cooper notched his first goal of the season to open the scoring in the third quarter. The goal came off an assist from sophomore Eric Seglinski with just less than seven minutes left in the third quarter.
After two straight Marlins goals, Lowe would score his second goal of the game off an assist from Langton.
The Spartans would enter the fourth quarter leading 9-5. The Spartans first goal of the fourth quarter would be a man-up goal scored by junior John Dubois off an assist from Corey Cooke with about seven minutes left in the game. Lowe would score his third goal of the game with less than six minutes left in the game.
With less than four minutes left in the game the Spartans found themselves tied at 11-11. With seven seconds left in the game Josh Gamble would score his fourth goal of the day and the game-winning goal.
Junior Tyler Powell earned the win in goal for the Spartans as he recorded 15 saves on 51 Marlin shots. Tyler Keech took the loss for the Marlins as he allowed 12 goals while he registered 11 saves for VWC.
Virginia Wesleyan ended the game holding a 51-34 edge in shots while the Spartans collected 43 ground balls to 34 for the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan won 18 of the 26 face off in the game while the Spartans scored the game's lone extra-man goal.
The Spartans will travel to Orlando, Florida for their spring break trip next week, where they will play two games. On February 26, the Spartans will face off against Rollins, and on March 2 the Spartans will face St. Vincent.
The Spartans will return home to Kinsley Field on March 12, when they host Messiah College at 1:00pm.
