Spartans Fall in OT at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The York College men’s lacrosse squad lost a nail-biter Saturday afternoon, falling 14-13 in overtime at Virginia Wesleyan. The Spartans begin the season 0-2 while the Marlins start with a flawless 2-0 mark.

With the score knotted at 9-9 after the first 30 minutes, the Spartans used a 3-1 third quarter to nab a 12-10 lead. After an early fourth quarter goal from Virginia Wesleyan’s Adam Nycz, the Green and White regained their two-goal advantage on a Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston) tally just six seconds later.

Unfortunately for the visitors, that 13-11 lead would evaporate. A mid-fourth offensive from the Marlins, with goals at the 7:34 and 6:24 marks, tied the non-conference contest.

The tilt then spilled into overtime where it took Virginia Wesleyan’s Curran Lee, the one who had score the equalizer with 6:24 left, only 3:01 to tally the game-winner off an assist from Nick Northern.

For the game, the Marlins outshot their guest 51-44 while also owning the lead in ground balls by a slight 48-47 margin.

McNicholas led the Spartan attack as he notched a game-high six goals. Newcomer Kevin Topper (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) added three scores for the Spartan side while Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) recorded a goal and two assists. Freshman Jamie Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) distributed three helpers. Spartan netminder Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster) suffers the loss despite making 12 saves for the Green and White.

Lee paced the Marlins offensively, tallying four goals. Travis Puls added a trio of scores while Nycz recorded two. Goalkeeper Tyler Keech nabs the victory, making 16 stops for the home squad.

York begins their 2010 home slate next Saturday, February 27. The Spartans are set to host St. Vincent in a 1:00 p.m. tilt from Kinsley Field.
