Spartans Take it on the Chin Against #14 Haverford
YORK, PA - The York College men's lacrosse team ran into a buzzsaw Wednesday afternoon, falling to #14 Haverford 20-10 in York. With the non-conference loss, the Spartans fall to 1-4 on the season while the Fords improve to 3-1.
The Spartans looked sharp early, notching the game's first goal on a nice combination between Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) and Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston). From behind the goal, Gamble found an open McNicholas near the left post putting the senior attack in position to give a quick feign before notching the game's opening salvo.
Despite York's early advantage, Haverford quickly erased that lead on four straight goals over a 6:11 span. The Spartans responded however, with a tally at the 5:33 mark to end the first quarter down a mere two at 4-2.
It was the second quarter however, that blew the game wide open. The Fords tallied seven unanswered goals in the second period, from six different players, to take a significant 11-2 halftime lead.
The Spartans battled over the final two quarters, even winning the fourth by a 4-3 count, but it would not be enough to surmount Haverford's second-frame explosion.
For the contest, Haverford led in shots 43-38 while York held a 47-40 edge in ground balls. The key proved to be faceoffs, where the Fords won 20-of-33 attempts.
Andrew Kim and Travis Gregory led the visitors offensively with four goals apiece. Kim, a starting midfielder, also dished out two assists and picked up four ground balls. Additionally, Zack Cohen handed out five helpers of his own. Henry Lanier scored three times for the Fords while three others scored twice. Joe Banno picks up the win between the pipes after allowing six goals and registering five saves over his 45 minutes of work.
For the Spartans, Gamble scored three and recorded a pair of assists as he ups his season total to 14 and seven, respectively. McNicholas, Kevin Topper (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty), and B.J. Blaker (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) each added two goals while Blaker also posted two helpers and five ground balls. Zach Scherr (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) led the Green and White in ground balls with eight while winning 16-of-24 faceoffs.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 13, when they travel to nearby Grantham, Pa. for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt with Messiah.
