Mersinger, Gaeta Receive All-CAC Accolades
YORK, PA – The York College men’s lacrosse team received outstanding news Thursday as Steve Mersinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and John Gaeta (Bel Air, Md./Archbishop Curley) were each selected to the 2009 All-Capital Athletic Conference squad.
Mersinger, who was named to the first-team as a defenseman, lands on the league’s all-star team for the third time in his illustrious career, including his second straight bid as a first-team choice. The senior put together an excellent 2009 campaign, recording 52 ground balls and causing 23 turnovers, having started all 15 games for the Spartans. Mersinger leaves the Spartan program as its all-time leader in caused turnovers (60) while ranking third in the ten-year history of the squad with 212 ground balls.
Gaeta lands on the All-CAC team for the first time in his career, nabbing a second-team bid in 2009. The physical and talented defensive midfielder was a key cog in this season’s Spartan lineup as he proved a valuable asset all over the field. In addition to his 29 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers, Gaeta also tallied 13 points on seven goals and six assists. His rugged yet skillful play in the Spartan midfield provided the Green and White with a physical presence that could gain and keep possession as well as transition into the attack.
The Spartans concluded their 2009 season last Tuesday with a come-from-behind 10-9 victory over Catholic.
