Spartans Roll to Home Opening Win over Hood

YORK, PA – The York College men’s lacrosse team rolled to a 20-2 victory in their 2008 home opener against the visiting Blazers of Hood College. The Spartans improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference while Hood drops to 0-3 (0-3 CAC) on the young season.

The Spartans controlled play from the opening whistle as senior midfielder Chris Chappelle (Stevensville, Md./Chesapeake) tallied merely 20 seconds into the contest. York would never look back.

After Chappelle’s goal, a flurry of offense ensued for the green and white. Senior attackman Kyle Henninger (Millers, Md./Hereford) would score three of his game-high four goals in the first frame, sophomore Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston) added two notches, and junior Brian O’Neill (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) chipped in with his second goal of the season. The Spartans would take the frame 7-1.

York kept pouring on the pressure in the second stanza.  Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) kicked-off the scoring with 13:18 left in the quarter. Henninger would then tally his fourth of the day with 11:35 remaining. Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Gamble, and Kalen Roundy (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) would complete the Spartans’ first-half scoring as the green and white took at 12-1 lead into the locker room.

The second half would prove much the same story for the Spartan side. Gamble, McNicholas, Roundy, and Zach Scherr (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) would each add to the scoreboard in the third frame as the green and white would lead 16-1 after 45 minutes of play.

The Spartans would throttle it down a bit in the fourth quarter as head coach Jim Griffin used the opportunity to get many of the York reserves quality on-field experience. Even with the changes, the Spartans still controlled the game and scored four more times in the last period. After a Hood goal with 9:31 left in the game, sophomore Brandon Echard (Dunkirk, Md./Southern) would notch his first goal of 2008 at the 6:34 mark. Freshman attackman John Mortimer (Morton, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) would then tally twice for his first career scores while fellow freshman attackman Mike Lugat (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola) closed-out the Spartan scoring with his first career tally.

For the game, the Spartans held a huge 60-23 advantage in total shots and picked up 58 ground balls to Hood’s 30. The green and white were dominant in the face-off category winning 20 of 25. York was also very efficient on their clear attempts going 33-35 while the Blazers went 24-37.

Henninger had a great day for the Spartan side registering four goals, three of which came in the first quarter.  Gamble and McNicholas each recorded hat tricks while Roundy and Mortimer each added a pair of goals.

In addition to his two scores, Roundy also registered two assists as did O’Neill and freshman midfielder Adam Cooper (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air).

Rod Hendrickson was a bright spot for the Blazers as he scored both Hood goals.

Spartan goalkeeper Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) picks up the win in the Spartan net notching two saves in his 15 minutes of work. Freshman Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster) worked a scoreless second frame registering six saves, while Joe Kenworthy (York, Pa./Severna Park) made five stops, as he did not allow a goal in his 15 minute third quarter. Freshman Devin O’Neill (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) ensured the Spartan victory with a pair of saves in the final stanza.

Sam Hoffman takes the loss for the Blazers as he recorded 19 saves amidst the relentless Spartan pressure. Nicholas O’Brien relieved Hoffman for the final period and notched one save.

The Spartans return to action this Wednesday, March 5, as they are set to travel to Messiah College for a 3:30 pm tilt.
