Big Second Quarter Lifts W&L Over Spartans

LEXINGTON, VA-The York College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 13-5 non-conference decision at Washington & Lee University on Wednesday night in Lexington, VA. The Spartans fall to 1-1 for the campaign while the Generals improve to 2-0.

The Spartans got off to a great start as they struck for a pair of man-up goals just over five minutes into the game. Kalen Roundy (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) scored the first man-up goal at the 9:32 mark off a pass from Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). The Spartans struck again 39 seconds later as Kyle Henninger (Millers, Md./Hereford) scored a second man-advantage goal off a pass from Brian O’Neill (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township). The Spartans finished the first quarter holding the 2-0 lead. The Spartans held a significant 13-5 edge in first quarter shots while they won all three face-offs in the quarter.

Things changed drastically for the Spartans in the second quarter as the Generals riddled the Spartan defense for seven unanswered goals. W&L began the onslaught with a Will Keigler goal 3:34 into the stanza and Tyler Lenczuk capped the quarter with a goal just seven seconds before the half. The Generals out-shot the Spartans 12-4 in the second while they also held a 16-8 ground ball advantage in the frame.

The hosts continued to pressure the Spartan defense in the third quarter as they out-scored York 5-0. The final two General goals of the third were man advantage goals as the hosts led 12-2 through three periods.

York finally stopped the W&L run with an Adam Cooper (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) goal with 11:15 left in regulation. Logan Bartlett scored the final goal for the Generals before the Spartans received goals from Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) and John Gaeta (Bel Air, Md./Archbishop Curley) to close out the scoring.

Ned Rider led the Generals with three goals while Keigler added a pair of goals and a game-high three assists. Will Englehart and Deets Hoffman each contributed two goals to the Washington & Lee attack.

The Spartans’ five goals were scored by five different players.

The Generals out-shot the Spartans 31-26 while they also held a 52-39 edge in ground balls. The hosts won 14-of-21 face-offs while both teams had a pair of man-advantage goals.

Spartan goalie Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) played the first 45:10 of the game before giving way to Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Keeler made five saves while he allowed 12 of the Generals’ 13 goals. Collins made two saves and allowed one goal in 14:50 of work.

Connor Locke earned the win in net for W&L as he registered five saves in his 48:45 of work. Alex Heaton relieved Locke and allowed two goals as he made five saves.

The Spartans open up their home schedule on Saturday afternoon as they host Hood College in their CAC opener. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
