STEVENSON, MD – The York College men’s lacrosse team fell to Villa Julie 19-5 Wednesday afternoon in Stevenson, MD in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The Spartan record drops to 6-6 and 2-4 in the CAC while the Mustangs improve to 8-2 and 4-0 in league play.
Villa Julie rattled off the game’s first five goals before the Spartans could crack the scoreboard. The Mustangs tallied three first quarter scores and then put two more on the board in the second stanza before Brian O’Neill (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) connected with Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) for Schab’s sixth goal of the season with 10:29 left in the half. Nearly two minutes later at the 8:38 mark, senior defensive midfielder Rob Marine (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) then cut the Mustang lead to 5-2 on an assist from Steve Roy (Feasterville, Pa./Archbishop Wood).
After a Villa Julie tally to move the score to 6-2 in favor of the home squad, O’Neill recorded his second helper of the game as he assisted on a Kalen Roundy (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) score with 7:12 left in the frame.
Roundy’s tally seemed to light a fire under the Mustangs as they proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to balloon their lead to 16-3. Kevin Donnelly kicked-off the Mustang run with 4:29 to go in the first half while Scott Kazimer’s goal with 6:21 left in the third quarter closed out the flurry.
Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) finally broke the Mustang spurt when he scored off a Kyle Henninger (Millers, Md./Hereford) assist with 3:54 showing on the third quarter clock. After another Villa Julie score, T.C. Cooke (Glenmoore, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) would add the Spartans’ fifth and final tally of the afternoon with 10:36 left in the game. Cooke’s notch was the first of his young Spartan career. The Mustangs would then rack up two more goals and send the green and white home with the 19-5 loss.
For the game, Villa Julie out shot the Spartans 51-21 as the Mustangs tallied at least ten shots in each of the four quarters. Ground balls were nearly a wash at 52-51 in favor of the home team while Villa Julie won 18-of-27 face-offs.
Six players recorded multiple goals for the Mustangs with Richard Ford notching a game-high four tallies. Both Kazimer and Donnelly each recorded a hat trick.
Steve Mersinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) once again played a strong game for the Spartans on the defensive side of the field. The All-CAC defenseman collected a game-high ten ground balls and caused five turnovers, which was also a game-best.
Eric Fleegle picks up the win the Mustang net, registering three saves in his 45 minutes of action. Geoff Hebert, Christopher Carroll, and Andrew Harrington manned the pipes for the final 15 minutes as Harrington notched a pair of stops. Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) takes the loss in goal for the Spartans as he made five saves in his 25:40 of work. Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster) played the next 30:59 as he also made eight saves. Joe Kenworthy (York, Pa./Severna Park) finished off the final 3:21 and made one stop.
