Roy Tallies Four as Spartans Open with 15-4 Win at Guilford
GUILFORD, NC – The York College men’s lacrosse team opened their 2008 campaign in fine fashion Saturday afternoon grabbing a 15-4 victory over Guilford. The Spartans start 1-0 and earn their third consecutive win over the Quakers in as many seasons.
Senior midfielder Steve Roy (Feasterville, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tallied a team-high four goals, notching scores in three separate periods including three consecutive goals over the final 2:37 of the third quarter and the first 1:10 of the fourth. Freshman John Gaeta (Bel Air, Md./Archbishop Curley) made an immediate impact from his midfield position, recording a hat trick in his first collegiate appearance.
Senior midfielder Chris Chappelle (Stevensville, Md./Chesapeake) kicked-off the scoring for the Spartans with 7:04 remaining in the first quarter. Gaeta and Gavin Scherr (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) then combined just 1:35 later as Gaeta’s tally put the green and white up 2-0. Senior attackman Kyle Henninger (Millers, Md./Hereford) gave York a three goal lead in with 2:57 left in first quarter before Adam Cooper (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) made it 4-0 Spartans merely 19 seconds later.
Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Roy each tallied in the second quarter to give the Spartans a 6-1 lead heading into the halftime break. Aside from the scoreboard, the green and white led 28-19 in shots, collected 17 ground balls, and won five of nine face-offs.
York turned up the heat in the third period, rattling off 19 shots to Guilford’s one. Those 19 Spartan attempts turned into a trio of scores, including two of Roy’s four, and the visitors suddenly found themselves up 9-2.
The fourth period proved to be the most favorable stanza for the York offense. Five different Spartans scored in the frame as the green and white racked up six more goals. Sophomore attackman Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored back-to-back tallies while Gaeta completed his hat-trick with a pair in the final period.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) picked up the win in the Spartan net working the first 45 minutes. Joe Kenworthy (York, Pa./Severna Park) and Devin O’Neill (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) combined over the final 15 minutes to finish out the contest. The trio recorded 12 saves on the afternoon to secure the victory.
Andrew Vigne takes the loss for the Quakers as he, Mark Guillen, and Ian MacPhail combined for 21 saves.
For the game, the Spartans owned a strong 63-30 bulge in shots,
while they also led their opponents 31-28 in ground balls. Scherr
posted a pair of assists to start his junior campaign, while
Mike LaRoque (Arnold, Md./DeMatha) and Dan
Wood (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton) each collected five
ground balls to lead the Spartans. Wood also caused a team-high
