Spartans Set to Host Four Team NCAA Tournament Pod Friday

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team returns to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament starting Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans welcome Yeshiva, Hamilton, and Nazareth to Charles Wolf Gymnasium for a two-day pod. The Spartans square off against Yeshiva in round one followed by the Hamilton and Nazareth game. The two winners square off Saturday night with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16.

Spartans in the NCAA Tournament  

The Spartans are making their fifth tournament appearance all-time … York has earned three at-large bids (2004-05, 2011-12, 2017-18) after winning the Capital Athletic Conference title … York earned an at-large berth in 1994-95 and in 2005-06 … the Spartans are 4-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament … they advanced to the 2004-05 NCAA Division III Final Four … York is 2-1 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament but the new Charles Wolf Gymnasium has not hosted a men's NCAA Tournament game … York's last NCAA tournament resulted in a 72-50 loss at Franklin & Marshall in 2012 … York is 2-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

 

How They Got Here

• Yeshiva earned an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament after their 87-81 win over second seeded Purchase College in the Skyline Conference championship game. The Maccabees defeated fifth seeded Mount Saint Mary College 80-67 in the tournaments opening round and earned their berth in the title game with a thrilling 77-75 overtime win over top seeded Farmingdale State in the semifinals. Yeshiva is red hot as the Maccabees have won 13 of their last 14 and four straight games. Yeshiva's lone loss during the streak is a double overtime 73-69 setback against Farmingdale State in their next to last regular season game. The Maccabees enter the tournament with an overall record of 18-10

• Hamilton earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid after they lost to #8 Williams 76-73 in the NESCAC semifinals. The Continentals finished the year with a stellar record of 22-4 to earn the at-large berth. The Continentals started the season with 15 straight wins before Amherst downed Hamilton 75-49 in Amherst on January 20. The Continentals had a strong February as they went 5-2 to secure the at-large bid.

• Nazareth earned its way into the NCAA Tournament with a 66-64 win over Utica in the Empire 8 championship game on Feburary 24. The Golden Flyers earned the number one seed in the tournament and opened the tournament with a 73-72 win over Alfred University in the semifinals. The Golden Flyers then downed number three Utica in the title game. The Golden Flyers enter the first round game with a record of 20-7. The Golden Flyers had seven game win streak late in the year that allowed them to capture the top spot in the Empire 8.

 

Spartan Notes:

The Spartans' 23 wins are the most regular season victories since the 2005-06 squad went 25-4 overall including 23-2 in the regular season … the Spartans began the season 16-0 for the school's longest win streak … York is 7-3 in their last ten games … the senior class has now won 40 games in the last two seasons … seniors Dalton Myers, Matt Scamuffo, and Blayde Reich all have scored 1,000 points in their Spartan careers … Myers is ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,461 points while Scamuffo is currently 12th at 1,343 points … Reich is 20th with 1,127 points … Myers is also ranked seventh in career field goals (546), 11th in field goal percentage (.538), tenth in free throws made (293), 12th in free throws attempts (392), 15th in total rebounds (506), third in blocked shots (91), fourth in blocked shots per game (0.9), and fourth in games started (94) … Scamuffo is third in career three point field goals (231), second in career three point field goal attempts (653), 14th in three point field goal percentage (.354), 12th in free throws made (272), 13th in free throws attempted (378), and third in games started (95) … In addition to Reich's ranking on the scoring list, he is ninth in career rebounding (570), 11th in career rebounds per game (5.6), fifth in blocked shots (75), and sixth in blocked shots per game, and tied for 9th in games started (88) … sophomore Jared Wagner ranks tied in all-time steals with 122 … junior Jason Bady ranks tied for ninth in career steals (109) and is sixth in career steals per game (1.4) … Bady also ranks 15th in career blocked shots (43) and tenth in blocked shots per game (0.6).

The two Friday winners will square off in Saturday's regional final. The game time will be determined by the advancing teams. If Yeshiva wins, the game Saturday will be played at 8:30 pm. If York advances, the game will be played at 7:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
